St George’s Day

Summary

St George’s Day celebrations offer a major public opportunity for Scouts to have fun and renew their Promise.

Historically these have taken the form of a parade and a faith service which includes the renewal of the Scout Promise. However a growing number of celebrations now take the form of activity days for all involved in Scouting or finding new and exciting ways of young people and adults renewing their Promise. St George is the Patron Saint of all that we do in Scouting, so it should be like all of Scouting, fun!

The message for 2007 is: 'Think fun and think everyone'. Examples could include:

Taking over the local park/campsite and running activities for the whole District at the same time. From face painting for Beavers (and Network?) to climbing on a mobile climbing wall.

Or

Bringing together the District in a park and invite a team of musicians or actors to work with each Group in making a music extravaganza. This would require prior work by each Section beforehand.

Or

As a District spend the day working on a local conservation project.

All of these simple ideas can have spiritual dimensions to them. Thoughts and prayers written and delivered by young people can add meaning to an event, especially when they have been having fun. The involvement of faith leaders can also add to this element but it should always be relevant to the young people present.

The final aspect to a St Georges Day Celebration is the renewal of the Promise, again giving the young people an opportunity to together make a joint declaration of how they will act out their lives as Scouts.
