Queens Scouts celebrate raising £100,000 for "Tsunami Scout Aid Fund"

Hundreds of Queen’s Scouts from all over the UK came together this weekend at Windsor castle to celebrate their achievements in gaining their Queens Scout award. For the young people undertaking this award “service to others” and “community involvement” are a vital part of their activities.

These Queens Scouts along with the UK’s 500,000 other Scouts have extended the hand of friendship to Scouts in disaster areas affected by Boxing Day’s surprise tsunami earthquake. Together they have already raised over £100,000 to aid the world wide “Tsunami Scout Aid fund”, and more money is rolling in every day. So far Scouts around the world have raised over £220,000 for Tsunami Scout Aid.

Chief Scout, Peter Duncan, is proud of the organisation’s effort and the young people’s hard work. ‘It’s so good to see Scouts working together to help the tsunami victims. It truly shows how much these young people care about others and the world in which we all live in,’ he said.

The UK Scout Association which is the largest coeducational youth organisation operating in the UK is working in partnership with other Scout Associations around the world as part of the worldwide appeal being run by Scouting.

Funds are being directed specifically towards helping young people and their families who are living in communities and affected by the disaster. Scouts in the region will be directly helping other young people in need by utilising the funds made available by the appeal to improve housing conditions, supporting the reestablishment of small businesses, setting up vaccination programmes, replacing play and recreation facilities destroyed in the disaster, and facilitating the return to school.

Special camps and activity programmes will be run for those children traumatised by the disaster.

The collection from this week’s national Queens Scout service taking place at St Georges Chapel, Windsor Castle will go to the Tsunami Scout Aid Fund.
