Off to the Jamboree - little sister weighs her big brother's enormous rucksack. Note the gas-mask bag slung round the Scout's shoulder

This Scout is off to Camp. He will be leaving any minute from a railway station with lots of other Scouts, all packed into carriages pulled by a steam engine. He has a gas-mask bag slung round his right shoulder, which means that this photograph was taken some time between 1938 and 1945. His canvas rucksack and blanket roll obviously weigh a lot - his little sister can't even lift it all!

Notice the details of his uniform. He has many more 'bits and bobs' attached than we have on our uniforms nowadays - even his socks and 'flashes' were part of the uniform, and his hat and shirt are covered in badges. He has obviously passed his First Aid training. He would also have had a knife in a leather scabbard attached to his belt on his right-hand side. What do you think of this uniform? Would you want to wear a kit like that?
