What is Explorer Scouting?

Richard – Explorer

“I have been in Scouting for 11 years, ever since I was a Beaver and my friends suggested I come along and try it out.

I think I would be far less outgoing had I not been involved in Scouting. You meet so many people from across Europe, and make so many friends, that you find yourself talking about all sorts of things and any thoughts of shyness are forgotten. It’s because we all have a common interest.

This year I am going to the World Scout Jamboree and I will meet people from many different cultures. I’m really looking forward to it.

I have been helping out with a Beaver Colony for the last 18 months and am also working towards my Chief Scout Award. I can’t imagine a time where I wouldn’t be involved in Scouting.”

Explorer Scouts are young people, usually aged between 14 and 18 years old. They make up the fourth Section of the Scouting family. There are many types of Explorer Scout Units, some may be linked to your local Scout Group, others may be based around different activities.

Not all Units meet each week, because you will often be out and about at weekends or in the holidays doing activities. There will be times when you will be busy doing other things such as exams, and being an Explorer Scout will have to fit around these.

As an Explorer Scout, you will get the chance to work with other Explorer Scouts in your District, not just your Unit. By doing this, you will get the chance to do many more actvities, not just the ones your Unit organises.
