The Young Leaders' Scheme

Sally- Ann – Young Leader

“I have only been in Scouting just over a year but I can’t imagine life without it now! My friend and my brother recommended Explorer Scouts to me but it was the Young Leaders’ Scheme that really attracted me.

This means that not only do I get to do really cool activities such as canoeing and travelling abroad, I also help out with the Beaver Section. This is brilliant experience for me as I am training to become a Childcare Assistant. It has also given me more confidence and responsibility and made me more organised.

The best thing about being a Young Leader is you are helping young people and you are also treated as an adult. Everyone should come along and try it – it really is good fun.”

The Young Leaders' Scheme is just one of the exciting programme elements in the Explorer Scout Section. All Leaders in the Beaver Scout, Cub Scout and Scout Section who are between the ages of 14 and 18 must be members of a Young Leaders Unit. They are Explorer Scouts who choose to devote a large proportion of their time in Scouting to service in another Section.

The Young Leaders' Scheme helps Explorer Scouts to develop and grow as individuals. It allows them to make a valuable contribution to their community and give service to others. The scheme also helps them fulfil the service elements of their awards.
