Campdowne 2008, 24 July – 2 August

Do you fancy volunteering at an international camp without leaving the country? After the Centenary celebrations, are you wondering what’s next on the Scouting horizon? If so, Campdowne 2008 could be your answer, writes Lee Allwood

This international Scout and Guide camp has been held at Downe, in Kent, for nearly 20 years. Downe is the most recent campsite to become a National Scout Activity Centre and, due to these changes, this will be the first Campdowne not solely organised by Greater London South East. Instead, a new-look core organising team has injected some fresh ideas to help bring the next Campdowne experience to as many young people as possible.
Campdowne is home for 2,500 Scouts, Guides, Explorers, Rangers and Leaders for 10 days of events and activities. Gavin Jackman, of the Campdowne media team, tells us that, so far, the Campdowne website has had well over 5,000 visits from over 50 countries.

And this is where you come in

Those of you who have been to international events before will know these camps don’t just happen on their own. The core team needs over 400 volunteers to make sure that everything happens how, when and where it should. They have volunteering opportunities across the board and want Network members to come along and add their own special skills to the mix.
Campdowne 2008 needs individuals and teams for everything from site services and security to catering and media. Gavin tells us that they especially need staff for the activities teams, as Campdowne 2008 will have more on-site activities and events than ever before. Whatever your preference, they can accommodate you. Of course, there will be the (extensively stocked) staff bar and entertainment every evening. Best of all though, three meals a day are included in your camp fee!
On top of that, there is the opportunity to meet and mix with people from all over the world (and maybe meet up with some old friends). If you think you or your Network may want to get involved, register your interest by visiting www.campdowne.org and filling in the online form. We will be in touch with more details closer to the time.
