Help Guide
Keeping your Passwords Safe
This advice is not only relevant to your www.scouts.org.uk login but to all other sites that require you to create and use a password. Your passwords are the keys to your bank accounts, email and more; here are some tips on keeping them safe:
- Never share your passwords, this is the most important thing to remember, if someone else logs in using your username and password, anything they do will be logged against your username.
- Choose a password that is at least 5 characters long; if possible use a combination of letters and numbers.
- Avoid words referring to anything noticeable about you: the name of your spouse, child, pet or your favourite football team.
- Don't use "password" or any other easily guessed option.
- Use a different password for www.scouts.org.uk than you do for your Internet banking or your email.
- Change your password immediately if you think it has been compromised.
- Remember to log-off when you have finished using websites.
The weakest link in any security system is usually the people who use it. As more and more business moves online, we need to be increasingly concerned about security. By being protective of and careful with your passwords, you can greatly decrease the odds that anyone will break into and misuse your computer accounts.
