Scouting on Safe Internet Day

Scouts using a computer at the 21st World Scout Jamboree

Today is Safer Internet Day, an annual event aimed at giving teachers, parents and youth leaders an opportunity to talk about issues regarding using the internet and to more importantly raise awareness of them.

The Scout Association is committed to helping its young people stay safe when online. Both our home page and KidsOutdoors.com have links to key information sites such as the Child Exploitation & Online Protection Centre (CEOP) and Think U Know websites.

Both the CEOP and Think U Know sites have information and advice on safe internet usage. There are also areas for young people to learn about online safety, as well resources you can use with your Section or Group, including a whole host of case study videos, worksheets and programme ideas.

This is the 5th Safer Internet Day and this year’s theme is ‘life online is what YOU make of it’. It has already inspired hundreds of school classes, youth clubs and national bodies from around the world. You can read a selection of their thoughts on internet safety at the Safer Internet Day 2008 Blogathon.

DongleIf you want to encourage the young people in your Section to learn about keeping safe when using their computer, CBBC’s Stay Safe site has an excellent online safety video aimed at young people.

Here they can watch and learn as Dongle the rabbit fends off a predatory online crocodile. There’s also a safety quiz for young people to try, including a certificate they can print off.
