Climbing wall lets Scouts scale new heights
Young people at one Scout Group are climbing high, thanks to the installation of a new climbing wall at their meeting place.
The Steve Bradford Memorial Climbing wall was unveiled at the headquarters of 1st Ashtead (Pelham) Scout Group, Surrey. This permanent, indoor facility means that young people of various ages and abilities will be able to climb throughout the year.
As a second phase, the Group plan to add more features to the wall, which will improve its versatility and increase the range of activities they can offer their Scouts.
Trained instructors, drawn from both the Group’s leadership and its parent base, will supervise. The wall is the only one in the local area, and will be open to all neighbouring Scouts and Guides by prior arrangement.
Group Secretary, Alison Morris said: ‘Steve Bradford was a Cub Scout Leader with the Group, who sadly passed away earlier this year. He was responsible for developing, teaching and inspiring hundreds of local young people over many years. Steve would have strongly approved of the climbing wall, as it was one of his dreams to see it installed.
‘Significant funding has come from donations to the ‘Steve Bradford Climbing Wall Fund’ by local businesses and residents.'We were also awarded a large grant from Mole Valley District Council as a result of a successful application to the Thomas Flack Trust Fund.’
Councillor Mountford, Chair of the Thomas Flack Working Group said: ‘We are very happy to be able to contribute to such an exciting project. This is an excellent example of what the fund was set up to do.’
The Group would like to thank all those who have generously contributed to the fund and helped to make this installation possible.
