Beavers plant for the future
Last year 2nd West Kirby Beaver Scout Colony celebrated Scouting’s Centenary year by planting a time capsule in their local park in West Kirby, Merseyside. With the support of the Friends of Ashton Park Group, the Beavers grabed their shovels and headed to the park on a nice sunny day in June.
They young people had spent a lot of time deciding what to include in their special time capsule. They decided to put in handwritten letters addressed to Beavers who may open it in the future. They also put in pictures of the Group in 2007, their Group scarf, a Centenary scarf and a little note about 2nd West Kirby Scouts.
However, the Beavers enjoyed making their time capsule so much that they decided to do something else for both the park and the Beavers of the future.
So a few weeks ago they all braved the freezing weather and returned to the site to plant a Horse Chestnut tree alongside their time capsule. This time they were given a helping hand with the digging by Dave Wade, the chairman of the Friends of Ashton Park, and some of their parents.
Assistant Beaver Scout Leader Zel Rodgers said: ‘Our Beavers made a little map for the future Beavers to use. The hope is that in years to come 2nd West Kirby Beavers will visit the tree, enjoy a game of conkers and remember the tree was planted in the Centenary year of Scouting.
‘Hopefully in 100 years time, the Beavers will remember to dig up the time capsule to have a look at life as it is seen now by Beaver Scouts.’
