Scouting at the Outdoors Show

When The Ordnance Survey Outdoors Show flung open its doors this morning, both The Scout Association and KidsOutdoors, its campaign to inspire a million new adventures, were there ready to get visitors active.

Crowds of thrill-seekers, there to get inspiration for their next adventure, got their adrenaline pumping by joining in with the rock climbing and high ropes activities that Scouting was offering.

In the queue for the high ropes were Stacey and Sophie, both 12, from Shaftsbury, Durham, who were on a school trip to the show.

Neither of the pair are Scouts but it soon became clear they love being outdoors. They said they both go outside every day of the week, after school and both days at the weekend and regularly take part in athletics, football, rock climbing and netball.

Stacey said: ‘All sports are great as long as you can take part. It’s not about the winning - it’s about the taking part. TV is ok when you are watching your favourite programme but I’d rather be outside getting fit.

Stacey and Sophie, both 12, from Shaftsbury, Durham‘I want to be a football trainer when I’m older. I don’t want my kids to be stuck in from in front of the TV - I want to put them through an education of sports.’

Sophie added: ‘It doesn’t matter where you are from or what religion you are, it’s about having fun. Being outside is much better than being on a computer or TV. You never find me indoors!

The annual show is the perfect place to give not only Scouts but young people of all ages a taste of the great outdoors. From having a go at diving and climbing to tackling the Trespass High Ropes Experience or learning essential skills to survive in the wilderness, the show has something for all budding adventurers.
