Scout's hobby makes him a finalist
A Scout has earned a place as a finalist in the national Hobbycraft competition called The Big Arts & Crafts Challenge.
Matthew Skinner,14, from 2nd Corringham Scout Group, Essex, made a china vase last year to celebrate the centenary of Scouting.
Matthew said: 'I entered the vase into the Hobbycraft competition hoping to do well and to be chosen as a finalist is brilliant! I’ve never done any pottery before but I really enjoyed making it. My uncle has a kiln which he showed me how it works and I used that to fire the vase in.'
The design painted onto it is blue with '1907' above and '2007' below the Scout arrowhead.
Last year The Scout Association celebrated its 100th year by hosting the 21st World Scout Jamboree at Hylands Park in Chelmsford. Over 40,000 Scouts joined in with the celebrations which centred on the 1 August 2007, as this marked the anniversary of the actual date of the very first Scout camp to be held.
Matthew said: 'I chose this design because it was such a big year for Scouting. I found making the vase quite a challenge as it wasn’t something I had done before.'
The winner of the competition will be chosen by an online vote, where members of the public can view all the other finalists and vote for the best one.
