Recruitment: a fresh approach
Careers Offices/Student Employment Office
Overview:
Almost all universities or colleges will have a Careers Office or Student Employment Office. The size of each will differ but all Careers Offices are well used by students. Most offices do not limit themselves to advertising job vacancies and will offer students advice in drop-in sessions, as well as information and workshops on impressing employers with CV’s, in interviews and at assessment centres. Careers Offices will normally be staffed by Careers Advisers who will realise that the key to successful employment after University is as much to do with a student’s skills, as it is to do with their degree results. Scouting is a fun way for students to gain some of these skills!
Top Tips:
- Contact the Careers Office at your local college or university. The ‘Institution Directory’ link below will take you to the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) website, where you will be able to find the websites of local institutions. Go to the website and look for the Careers page. This will normally contain the contact details of the Careers Office.
- Tell the Careers Adviser who you are and what you want to achieve. They may suggest putting posters up, bringing leaflets in, or maybe even giving presentations to students about what the Scouts do and how volunteering will benefit them.
- Some Careers Offices will also have a website so ask whether you could post some opportunities on their careers pages. Use the guidelines below to write your opportunities in a positive way.
- You could make yourself, or someone in your Group or District, available for drop-in sessions. This means that on a certain day between certain times, students can go to the Careers Office, or perhaps a more informal place in the college, and talk to you about the opportunities in Scouting. Make sure it is someone who is friendly and who can answer questions about different aspects of Scouting.
