Recruitment: a fresh approach
Employers and employees
Today, expectations are rising of the role that businesses can play in creating a prosperous society. More and more businesses are seeking ways to address these expectations whilst recognising that any activity that they undertake should benefit the business as well as the community it serves. By investing in Souting, a business can help to influence the education, development and support of young people who will become the workforce of the future and also help to raise its company profile in a positive way.
Approaching businesses might not be the first thing you think of when looking to recruit new adults to Scouting. However, by understanding the benefits of volunteering to business, you may get a better idea of just how good a source they are. Such benefits include:
- Creating a positive image of the organisation
- Increasing the commitment of staff to the organisation as a caring employer
- Making a visable commitment to the local community
- Developing potential recruitment channels by developing informal relationships with young people
- Helping to motivate and develop the skills of existing staff
Recruiting from businesses can also have a positive effect on young people, including:
- Increasing confidence, self-esteem and motivation to succeeed
- Helping to develop positive attitudes
- Providing opportunities to develop the skills necessary for adult working life
So don’t underestimate the role that businesses can play in your recruitment campaign!
However you decide to work with your local businesses, the most important thing to remember is to work at the relationship. Make sure that you communicate with the senior contacts and can clearly demonstrate the benefit to all parties involved. Also, as a note of caution, ensure that any business negotiations do not compromise the image of Scouting or go against any of the rules outlined in Policy, Organisation and Rules. If you are unsure about any aspect of working with local businesses then contact the Information Centre on 0845 300 1818.
