Recruitment: a fresh approach

Parents and family members

Parents are perhaps the largest source of recruitment for most Sections. Your parents already have an insight into Scouting and you already have a link to them. Whilst many parents drop off and pick up their young people from Section meetings, few realise that Scouting is not just a Section meeting – there is a whole host of other roles that are on offer. They also have a vested interest in keeping local Scouting strong.

Parents can also provide a link to other family members. Whilst a parent themselves may not be able to help, they may know of a family member or even a friend who might (remember that Scouting has no upper age limit). But don’t just wait for parents to offer their help. Many will be happy to get involved – they just need to be asked!

Parents can go to our dedicated Parents web pages to learn more about Scouting for their child, as well as ways in which they can help out. Order your copies of our no-nonsense parents’ guide to Scouting. These guides are a great way to welcome parents of Scouts in your Group and pass on important information to them. The guides are also a chance for you to find out more about their skills, experience and the time they could give to Scouting.
