Recruitment: a fresh approach
Leaflets and Posters
Overview:
There are a number of methods that you can use to create awareness of Scouting within local businesses. One such method is by distributing posters and leaflets. You could use the resources available from the Scout Information Centre or, alternatively, create your own that are more relevant to local Scouting. By doing this, you may attract the interest of people who would not otherwise have considered volunteering.
Top tips:
- Display posters on company premises, such as in canteens or kitchens, making sure you get permission first. Displaying posters in places such as these (where people sometimes stop and have a break) can be a very good way of getting the best from posters as people will have time to think about what they are looking at.
- You could also ask for leaflets to be distributed through pay packets or alternatively to be put into staff pigeonholes.
- Whether you use posters or leaflets, be sure to make them relevant to the audience you are trying to target. In this case, it will mean promoting the benefits that staff will get from volunteering for The Scout Association (such as training and personal development), whilst assuring people that Scouting is entirely flexible – no amount of help is too small.
- Remember that whilst leaflets and posters can be used effectively to create awareness about local Scouting, they will not work alone to recruit new adults. So back up your poster and leaflet campaign with personal visits to companies. You could include on the leaflet or poster a time when you are visiting the office to answer any questions people might have.
