Recruitment: a fresh approach
Volunteer Recruitment Fairs
Overview:
Throughout the academic year, many colleges and universities will organise Recruitment Fairs for their students. While some fairs may have just one section for voluntary organisations to recruit, others will have fairs specifically for this purpose. Volunteer recruitment fairs will usually be organised by the Careers Office of the college or university. The good thing about recruiting at one of these fairs is that the people who will attend will be those already willing to give up some of their time to help an organisation – they will usually be looking for the voluntary organisation that is right for them. So use this opportunity to recruit by selling Scouting as an adventure through which skills and experience can be gained!
Top tips:
- Contact the Careers Office at your local college or university. The ‘Institution Directory’ link below will take you to the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) website, where you will be able to find the websites of local institutions. Go to the website and look for the Careers page. This will normally contain the contact details of the careers office.
- Be sure to promote the flexibility of Scouting – this may attract students who are worried about time commitments due to their studies. Let them know that there are a variety of roles and promote The Scout Association’s training scheme.
- Take along promotional material with contact details so that students do not feel pressured into making a decision there and then. Take the contact details of those who express any interest and follow them up a week or so later.
