Scout Community week

Scout Community Week

Sainsbury’s will be welcoming Scout Groups into their stores from 3rd – 9th October 2007, as part of a new ‘Scout Community Week’. During the week, Scout Groups will be invited to raise money and awareness of what Scouting is about in 400 Sainsbury’s stores nationwide.

This is an excellent opportunity to shout about Scouting in local communities and attract adults and young people to the adventure as well as raising much needed funds for local Scouting.

Recruitment opportunities
To aid you in your recruitment of both adults and young people, The Scout Association has produced a set of four banners in association with Sainsbury’s and v. Click here to see the banners.

It has been agreed that these banners will be used by all Scout Groups taking part in Community Week to ensure consistency of approach across Sainsbury's stores'. The first three banners include messages about volunteering opportunities for 16-25 year olds as this is the age range that v has pledged to target. The final banner promotes both youth and adult Membership opportunities.

It is intended that these banners will be suitable for use at future recruitment activities, either independently or as a set.

District Commissioners have been asked to take responsibility for ordering the banners for all the Groups in their District. The cost for a set of four is £50.
To place an order call the Scout Information Centre on 0845 300 1818.

In addition to this, double sided flyers about opportunities within Scouting will be available free of charge. One side promotes opportunities for 16-25 year olds and the other is about the benefits Scouting offers regardless of your age.

When a District Commissioner places an order for banners they will be asked how many flyers they would like to receive. A limit of 400 per District is imposed due to cost restrictions. However, you can download the flyer here if you require additional copies.

Fundraising opportunities
There are a number of fundraising opportunities you can take advantage of. These include:

  • Bag packing
  • Litter picking
  • Bucket collections (you are likely to collect more money if you indicate that the money is going to a specific project). Please note only Scouts over 16 are legally allowed to fundraise in this way.
  • Accompanied shops – finding items for customers as they do their shopping
  • Pushing trollies for elderly people/people with children etc
  • Competitions such as guess how many woggles in a jar (pay to guess)
  • For Explorer and Network – car washing and taking shopping to cars
