Peter DuncanA flexible future for Scouting

It is always around this time of the year when my Scouting world merges with the pantomime world. Watching the LIVE07 rehearsals in Birmingham I kept imagining how the presenters might slip in some panto routines. But with such a spectacular programme, I am sure that won't be needed.

We had another brilliant weekend at the Tate Modern on 20 and 21 October when I had the pleasure of presenting Queen's Scouts Awards to some of our high achievers. I am happy to report no one fell down the crack that has developed in the Turbine Hall (in the name of art) and everyone seemed to enjoy the informal proceedings.

I also loved meeting the Art of Scouting winners - what a talented bunch. As Scouts we should all be truly interested in what our Queen's Scouts really think about the current state of our Movement, so I have asked them all to email me their thoughts. I promised that I would feed back to the wider Movement.

From The 02 arena to the Lord Mayor's Show, our Chief Scout looks ahead toa flexible future for Scouting and is inspired by this year's Queen's Scouts

It is always around this time of the year when my Scouting world merges with the pantomime world. Watching the LIVE07 rehearsals in Birmingham (by the time you read this, over 20,000 Scouts will have raised the roof of the 02 arena) I kept imagining how the presenters might slip in some panto routines. But with such a spectacular programme, I am sure that won't be needed.

Consulting the Movement

I also answered questions online - another thought-provoking session revealing some open and honest views. All this interaction has confirmed how difficult change is in large organisations and how easy it is to lose the connection between stakeholders and decision makers.

The question that always bothers me in Scouting is that we all talk about great flexibility and change but is it truly practised? Please let me know how you feel about this locally.

Prepared for the outdoors

I'm also looking forward to promoting even more outdoor adventure in 2008. Getting healthy and active is very much what we are about and adventurous activities are a great way to draw in those who are a little skeptical about Scouting.

I'm just off to walk the streets of London, possibly as Dick Whittington in the Lord Mayor's Show. Have a jolly Christmas, and spare a thought for me doing three shows on Boxing Day!
