Money matters

Just how much do we understand about managing money and making it last? NatWest, in partnership with The Scout Association, has produced an interactive activity packs for Leaders to help young Members learn about managing money

NatWest has a curriculum-approved financial education programme, which is run in primary and secondary schools. Adapting this material they have produced packs for Cub Scouts and Scouts, which will help them to learn key skills in money management. These fun activity packs will help Cub Scouts and Scouts achieve parts of many of the badges they are trying to gain including:
• Local Knowledge Badge (Cub Scout)
• Community Badge (Scout)
• Community Challenge Badge (Scout)
• Administrator Badge (Scout)
Each pack has content tailored specifically for the age range of each of the two sections – Cubs and Scouts. They are colourful, fun and interactive, making sure members get the most out of them and actually learn something in the process.

The cubs pack is full of fun activities illustrated by colourful cartoon characters. The Scouts pack is a Mission Impossible theme, with the Scouts being set various finance-orientated missions that need to be completed. Having worked through the packs either during a meeting or at home with their parents, they will have a better understanding of managing money as well as having some fun with a subject that, let’s face it, can be a bit dull. To ensure Cubs and Scouts get the most out of the packs, there are easy-to-use guidelines included with the packs to enable Leaders to help members work through the many activities.

There’s nothing too heavy or overcomplicated, they are simple to follow. The content covers a variety of areas such as:
• Bank account v money box – where’s the best place for your money?
• Why saving is good and how to make your money grow
• Fundraising ideas to raise monies for local community or Cub/Scout groups
• Dealing with foreign currency and money abroad
• Simple activities to help make your money go further
The packs will be provided by The Royal Bank of Scotland in Scotland and by NatWest in England and Wales.Available now, these packs are an easy-to-use, fun and interactive way of teaching young people key skills in managing and understanding money.

Free activity packs are available for Cub Scouts and Scouts from The Scout Information Centre on 0845 300 1818.

Badge buster – how the pack can help your Scouts gain badges
• Cub Scouting’s Local Knowledge Badge (Cub Scout). Cub Scouts will be able to complete the badge requirement:
‘draw a map of your area and mark on it places of interest for visitors and mark on a map or chart the organisations that help the local community.’
• Community Badge (Scout). Scouts can also:
‘find out about the range of community services provided within the local community’ with the pack.
• Community Challenge Badge (Scout). One of the badge requirements is to:
‘explore one aspect of how the local community works and is organised to the benefit of its members’ and this pack will ensure you have this covered.
• Administrator Badge (Scout). Every Scout who uses the pack will be able to understand
‘how a personal bank account operates’ – one of the essentials for the Administrator Badge.
